This deck project was built for our own personal residence in Great Falls, Montana. When our new construction home was finished, the back entrance had a temporary staircase installed by the general contractor. We replaced it with a finished Trex deck, combining composite decking with wood fascia, wood railings, and black metal balusters.
The result is a welcoming outdoor space that connects the house to the backyard and complements the home’s exterior.
The original staircase provided access during construction, but we wanted a permanent outdoor space where our family could spend time together. We built an elevated deck with a larger usable area and a staircase leading down to the yard.
We also poured a concrete landing at the bottom of the stairs, creating a solid transition between the staircase and the lawn.
For the deck surface, we chose Trex composite decking to reduce the upkeep associated with traditional wood deck boards. Wood fascia finishes the outside edge, while matching wood posts and railings give the deck a warm, classic appearance.
Black metal balusters add contrast and keep the railing looking open. This combination shows how composite decking can work alongside natural wood for homeowners who like both materials.
The Trex decking offers a lower-maintenance walking surface, while the wood fascia and railings still require periodic maintenance to preserve their appearance.
Building this deck for our personal residence gave us the opportunity to create a space we would use every day. From the finished decking to the concrete stair landing, each part helped turn a temporary construction entrance into a lasting part of our home.
It’s also an example of the work we offer through Great Falls Deck & Carpentry: practical deck designs, thoughtfully selected materials, and careful carpentry.
